The Background:
Hervey Road sports field is in the borough of Greenwich, in London
This green space has been used since 1890 by the local community for various sporting activities, including athletics, tennis, football, rugby, bowls and cricket (there are abandoned practice nets on the site). It even boasted a rifle range!
The local council is no longer maintaining these facilities, blocks access to the ground and is considering a plan to destroy this sports field and to build on it.
Local residents have formed an action group to fight this proposal and to urge the council to promote and renovate the field's facilities, to encourage sport, (particularly in the light of the council's undertaking to host and promote the Olympics in 2012) and thus to save this valuable green site.
